What is Khasra?

Also called: Khasra number, Khasra girdawari (crop inspection record), Survey number (elsewhere)

The number given to a field or plot in a village's revenue map in much of north and central India, and the register that records each field.

How it works and what to check

A khasra number identifies a specific piece of land on the village map, much as a survey number does in the south and west. The khasra register lists each field with its area, soil and crops.

Land is often sold as 'khasra no. X'. Make sure the deed's khasra number matches the field on the map and the record of rights, and that the area adds up.

Common questions

What is the difference between khasra and khatauni?

Khasra identifies the field; khatauni records who holds land, listing the khasra numbers in each holding.

Is khasra the same as survey number?

It serves the same purpose: a number for a land parcel on the revenue map.
