What is Bigha?

Also called: Beegha, Vigha (Gujarat)

A traditional land unit used in many northern and eastern states. It has no single size: a bigha differs from state to state and often district to district.

How it works and what to check

Bigha is in common use in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and, as vigha, Gujarat. Its size is not the same everywhere: it differs from state to state and often from district to district, so this site does not convert it to a single figure. Take the area in square feet, square metres or acres from the revenue record or the deed instead.

A seller or broker quoting a plot in bigha should be able to show the area in a standard unit on the khatauni, jamabandi or other record of rights. Insist on that figure before you agree a price.

Common questions

How many square feet in one bigha?

There is no single answer: it depends on the state and often the district. Use the area in square feet or acres from the land record.

Is a bigha the same everywhere in a state?

Not always. Values can differ within a state, which is why a converter cannot give one reliable figure.
