What is Katha?

Also called: Kattha, Cottah

A land unit used in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam, among others. Its size differs between states and sometimes within one.

How it works and what to check

Plots in Kolkata, Patna and Guwahati are often quoted in katha. Its size is not the same everywhere: it differs from state to state and often from district to district, so this site does not convert it to a single figure. Take the area in square feet, square metres or acres from the revenue record or the deed instead.

Decimal is also widely used in these states; unlike katha, it has a fixed size of one-hundredth of an acre.

Common questions

How many square feet in one katha?

It depends on the state and sometimes the district. Use the area in square feet or decimals given in the record.

Is katha the same as decimal?

No. A decimal is a fixed 435.6 sq ft; a katha varies by place.
